Romanticism, Maternity, and the Body Politic (Cambridge Studies in Romanticism)

This books examines the trials and errors of Romantic-period mothers, the politicizing of maternal bodies and the maternalizing of political bodies, the authoring of mothers and the mothering of texts. Julie Kipp views Romantic writers’ treatments of motherhood and maternal bodies through the lens of the legal, medical, educational, and socioeconomic debates about motherhood so popular during the period, discussions that rendered the physical processes associated with mothering matters of national importance. Widespread interest in the workings of the maternal body tended to make public the privately shared space signified by the womb or the maternal breast, both of which evidenced for writers of the period the radical exposure of mother and child to one another - for good or ill. Kipp’s primary concern is to trace ways that writers deployed representations of mother-child bonds variously as a means to naturalize, endorse, and critique Enlightenment constructions of interpersonal and intercultural relations. From Here to Maternity: The Education of a Rookie Mom

When Beth Teitell first learned she was pregnant, her mind raced with important questions: Does a handful of Milk Duds count as a serving of calcium? Where do movie stars buy their maternity clothes, and is $95 way too much to spend on a cotton T-shirt if you re not routinely okay, ever photographed by paparazzi? Then, just as she was beginning to imagine her maternity leave as a long, paid vacation from work, a time to catch up on reading and old movies, she was caught completely off guard by the arrival of a baby. And then the trouble really began.

From Here to Maternity
offers a hilarious, highly perceptive look at the experience of becoming a mom, exposing the secrets of modern parenting that your doctor will fail to warn you about and your fellow mothers will be too embarrassed to admit. From learning The Rules for playdating other mommies, to figuring out the New Mommy Math (a half hour of educational TV only counts as ten minutes toward your child s daily allowance), Teitell explores what it s like to be a mother in a culture responsible for strollers that cost as much as a month s rent. Chock-full of practical advice on motherhood s biggest challenges what to sing if you don t know any lullabies (the Brady Bunch theme song is a perfectly valid choice); the delicate art of picking up babysitters; and the ethics of returning a baby gift in order to buy yourself a little present with the merchandise credit From Here to Maternity tells it like it is with consummate style and laugh-out-loud irreverence.

A winning, utterly original look at the lighter side of the most serious job on earth, From Here to Maternity is the ultimate treat for mothers everywhere second only to a hot bath and the phone number of a good babysitter.
Customer Review: Please don’t buy this for first time parents
Witty and funny, yes….but also just more trite trash about how inconvenient kids are and how to minimize any effect they might have on your life. I especially hate how she writes in a conspirational tone, like we’re all doing these awful things and she’s the one actually admitting to it, like denying your kids naps til its convenient for you, throwing them at sick grandparents or whomever so you can go shoe shopping, and feeding them fast food to shut them up. I’m not so sure she even likes her kids after reading this, and I don’t recommend it for a new parent. Give a newbie something encouraging and positive, not this.
Customer Review: The BEST New Mother Book!
For my money, From Here to Maternity really hits the right note. It is both funny and sweet. Teitell knows how to take any difficult parenting moment and relate it with Seinfeldian humor and yet maintains the warmth and love of a real mom who has been through it. This is an honest look at the earliest days of motherhood, told in such an accessible style that it is guaranteed to hook any mom, no matter what state of parenting she is in. Teitell conveys deliciously the insecurities we all feel parenting in upscale America but makes us feel like we are actually part of the hip set. From Here to Maternity is fun and a MUST READ for anyone who is in need of a good laugh — which means every mom! Learn More / Buy Now

Essentials of Maternity, Newborn, and Women’s Health Nursing (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins))

This primary “essentials textbook” is intended specifically as the course text for the standard, increasingly shortened Maternity courses. The book covers topics of importance without providing the unnecessary detail that is seen in virtually all essentials maternity texts on the market today.

Customer Review: Outstanding text-user friendly for students!
In a textbook review process designed for ABSN students on March 23, 2006, at the Duke School of Nursing, students reviewed, rated and chose this new text as their textbook for their summer 2006 course: The Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family.

As the course coordinator, I have become increasingly frustrated with the ongoing complaints of students about the size and “massive” amounts of material presented in the classic, maternity nursing text books. In frustration and in an attempt to be more sensitive to the adult learners (the ABSN students) I organized a team of 8 students who reviewed 12 contemporary maternity texts published or reissued in the last 12 months.

Hands down this was the #1 student choice. Students cited: the concise format, synthesis of core information, easy to understand nursing actions, readable charts, illustrations accompanied by real pictures, small size, and attractive cover as reasons for their choice. One students summed it up when she said, “When I look at this text book, I just know I can read it. It does not feel so overwhelming to me as a student.”

While the author says it was designed for students in an ADN program, I would say it would be suitable for any beginning student. It has a very usuable on-line review section for students and a CD that accompanies the book.

While the vote is not in if the students will read the assigned readings in this text, I am confident that I am starting out the course with a text that is at least “user friendly” to students. I am very pleased with the choice of this textbook and would recommend it be given a review by maternity faculty and students.

Maternity & Women’s Health Care

Content carefully integrates the importance of understanding family, culture, and health promotion into the continuum of care. Maternity & Women’s Health Care has the most comprehensive coverage of maternal, newborn, and women’s health nursing care than any other text on the market.
Customer Review: nursing student
The book was really good at reviewing the chapters in the text. It didn’t really help me for the tests because our test questions were complex and difficult and I felt like the questions in this book were not. If you are having a hard time grasping the content in the text then this book might help but if you feel like you understand the text then this book my be unnecessary.
Customer Review: great textbook
I have really enjoyed this book (as much as a textbook can be enjoyable). It is concise, well-written, and to the point. Information is intelligently arranged so it is easy to reference and look things up. There are also lots of care plans included to help you out with clinical paperwork. My only gripe with this book is that the glossary is kind of puny- so if you don’t know what something is (and there are lots of words in OB that you won’t hear anywhere else) then you have to go back to the index and flip through the chapters to find where that thing is talked about in the book. This allows students to use one book throughout the curriculum. Care plans are organized in four separate sections (medical-surgical, pediatric, maternal, and psychiatric) and within each section alphabetically by disorder/condition. Customer Review: Not that great
This book seems to be helpful if you are searching for really specific diagnoses, but not for just a broad range. For example, risk for impaired skin integrity is due to chemotherapy. It is very specific in each category, and makes it impossible to use for a regular patient care plan. This was partly my fault because i did not read into it a lot before purchasing (bought in the store). I am hoping that I can return it and get a general care plan book, that is not so specific in the related to and evidenced by parts. This one would probably come in handy when I am in specialties phase this summer, however I am in an accelerated LPN program, and our specialties are short in length, so it is a waste of money. I do agree with a previous review that the book is not very well organized either.
Customer Review: absolutely awful
This book is a required book at my nursing school, otherwise I would be selling it now in the used book section. I have wasted sooo much time searching for things in this book. The organization is pitiful. It is organized by system, then disease process, so all of the nursing diagnosis are specifically related to disease(good luck if the disease isn’t in the book). I would not recommend this book to anyone, I have since spent lots of time and additional money trying to find a good care plan book. Learn More / Buy Now
